It's like, they had a good gameplay concept, that is incredibly fun, challenging, and hectic, and the creators just thought it couldn't stand on its own.

So what did the creators do? They just decided to basically throw in all this 'edgy' garbage that ruins the experience for me.

The story-line? Let's basically be openly incredibly insensitive to Christians. Now before anybody reading this (if there is anybody reading this!) jumps to the conclusion that I'm a butt-hurt Christian right now, I'm not. I like to consider myself a Theist, but that's aside the point. I feel that this is just a stupid tool/framing device the creators use to feel grown up and edgy. 'Ah yes, Christian people. Those idiots who just watch Christian Broadcast Network all day. They're an easy target to blatantly demean to feel edgy.'

Binding of Isaac is not meaninful, or mature. It's bloody beyond bloody, it's twisted beyond twisted. GTA does not hold a candle to this game. There is nothing you can do in GTA which comes close to even approaching using your dead cat as a powerup to help you kill your own siblings in a basement. Making deals with the devil to gain power. There's nothing metaphorical about any of it. The deeper you get into the game, the worse it gets.

What if this game openly mocked Muslims? Would it still be a cult hit? Would people still be angry at Nintendo for turning this game down if it followed a Muslim mother who listened to Allah and became an evil monster wanting to kill her kid? People would call the game bigoted and racist or what have you. And for the record, Nintendo isn't even the only company to turn this game down, apparently Microsoft has as well.

Honestly one of the locations is a womb. What about that is even a good idea?

Binding of Isaac is a fun game with a horrible coat of paint. If they stripped it down to its bare bones, and gave it a less mind-numbingly pandering theme of 'lol Christians are fuck-tards and poop and blood and crying children is cool.', I would really enjoy this game.

As much as I want to like this game based solely on the gameplay, I can't help but feel insulted by the game's gratuitous themes. It's like they thought the game wouldn't hold up by itself, so they through in as many offensive ideas as they could to make it. Thus this abomination of an attempt to be topical and edgy feels like it can't hold a candle to Super Meat Boy.

Anyways rant over. Tl;dr, I hate everything about Binding of Isaac except for the literal gameplay itself.

TBOI is one of my favourite games right now and to me, it's a game about very visceral symbolism (the oxymoron of an unsafe womb, tears as a weapon (you know, crying to take out foul emotions. I feel like killing those monsters is a parallel to coping mechanisms), scatology as a symbol of weakness (notice how crossing a door with only half a heart left makes Isaac piss himself), or how to deal with inner guilt (repentance through killing the boss Isaac or Satan)), and very dark comedy. The creator himself said that he grew up Catholic, and that Isaac is a distorted echo of his childhood. Religion touches upon many of Humanity's darkest fears and Isaac depending on that worldview to combat his demons is interesting. That's why TBOI's edginess never bothered me.
